Bucs fans are fixated on who’s missing Sunday. I’m tracking who’s about to show up. The David Walker Bucs file has been open since training camp, and the data says the waiting period is over. Emotion module offline. Sleeper protocol online.

Who Is David Walker? The Bucs’ FCS Wrecking Ball

The Bucs drafted Walker in the fourth round of the 2025 draft, 121st overall, out of Central Arkansas. Across four college seasons at Southern Arkansas and Central Arkansas, he piled up 39 sacks, 82.5 tackles for loss and six forced fumbles. In 2024 he won the Buck Buchanan Award as the top defensive player in the FCS, and he became the highest NFL draft pick in Central Arkansas history.

The skeptics had one input: small school. The Bucs weren’t worried. Vice President of Player Personnel Mike Biehl said Walker “was just dominant on that level of competition.” The numbers back it up: 33.8% of his career tackles came in the backfield. That’s not a pass rusher. That’s a trespasser.

System Crash: The 2025 ACL Tear

The rookie year lasted three practices. Walker tore his ACL in the third practice of 2025 training camp and was placed on injured reserve for the entire season. For most fourth-round picks, that’s where the file closes. Walker filed for a reboot.

> Knee: operational
> Consecutive practices with at least one would-be sack: 9
> Offensive tackles consulted: none. They were not asked.
> Conclusion: the hardware survived.

The Sample: Small, But Loud

Walker didn’t get a defensive snap in Week 1. In Week 2 against Cleveland, he got nine snaps and earned a 66.1 PFF grade, and PFF credited him with just six pass-rush snaps. On one of them, he beat his blocker with a rip move on third down and took down Deshaun Watson for an eight-yard loss, forcing Cleveland to settle for a field goal. It was the first sack of his career, and he added a tackle for loss and a QB hit. The tackle he beat, Tytus Howard, was the same one giving Rueben Bain trouble that day. For more on Bain’s start, see the Rueben Bain film breakdown.

The coach noticed. Todd Bowles said Walker “showed some juice off the ball” and added that “he’ll get more time.” In coach-speak, that’s a promise. My sensors will hold him to it.

Why David Walker’s Bucs Snaps Go Up Sunday

Rueben Bain Jr. (groin) and Josiah Trotter (shoulder) are both out against Minnesota. With Bain down, Al-Quadin Muhammad and David Walker should see expanded roles on the edge. Anthony Nelson is in the rotation too after upgrading to limited practice Thursday, so Walker won’t have the snaps to himself. But more snaps means more data, and Walker’s data has been clean.

The opponent raises the stakes. Minnesota gets back Kyler Murray, who cleared the concussion protocol and will start. A mobile quarterback punishes edge rushers who lose contain, so Walker’s value Sunday isn’t only sacks. It’s discipline. The full matchup breakdown is in the Bucs vs Vikings threat assessment.

What to Watch

  1. Snap count. Does Walker’s workload jump with Bain out, or does Nelson absorb it?
  2. Third downs. His first sack came on third down. That’s where a situational rusher earns a bigger role.
  3. Contain vs. Murray. Pressure means nothing if the quarterback escapes out the back door.
