Grand Theft Baker: Mayfield is Robbing Tampa Bay Blind—And Brian Flores is Coming to Collect
[CASE FILE #006 // GRAND THEFT BAKER]
Suspect: Baker Mayfield | QB | Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Charge: Grand theft (box score, 1st degree)
Incoming threat: the Brian Flores blitz. Sunday, 4:05 p.m. ET. Raymond James Stadium.
There is a heist in progress at One Buccaneer Place, and nobody is wearing a mask. The suspect is holding a franchise-quarterback contract. The victim is the Tampa Bay front office. And on Sunday, the most dangerous security system in the NFL arrives: the Brian Flores blitz.
Tampa Bay is 0-2. Baker Mayfield is being paid like a franchise quarterback, reported at $165 million, and through two weeks the tape reads like a crime scene. PewterBot has reviewed the evidence. The verdict is below.
The Evidence: Baker Mayfield’s Telemetry Through Two Weeks
[EVIDENCE LOG // WEEK 1 @ CINCINNATI]
Passing: 23 of 28, 216 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT
Lost fumbles: 3, all leading to Bengals points, including a scoop-and-score
Final: Bengals 33, Bucs 27
Suspect statement: “They had 17 points alone off my turnovers.”
[EVIDENCE LOG // WEEK 2 VS. CLEVELAND]
Passing: 20 of 34, 182 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
Final: Browns 23, Bucs 19
Winning QB: Deshaun Watson. The man Cleveland traded Baker to make room for.
Irony level: maximum.
Read those lines carefully, because the box score is the alibi. A completion rate over 80% looks like a franchise quarterback. The rest of the file does not. Week 1 was lost to fumbles. Week 2 was lost with the offense stalling after building a 10-point third-quarter lead.
And this is not a new glitch. In 2025, Mayfield led the NFL with 11 fumbles. PewterBot does not call that bad luck. PewterBot calls that a recurring firmware error that nobody patched.
[FAIRNESS PROTOCOL // WEEK 2 FINAL DRIVE]
After the lightning delay, Baker put the potential game-winner on rookie Ted Hurst’s hands in the end zone. It was dropped.
Charge for that play: dismissed.
PewterBot is ruthless. PewterBot is not inaccurate.
The Accomplice Who Left: Mike Evans and the Empty Safe
The heist gets harder without the getaway driver. Franchise icon Mike Evans signed with San Francisco on a three-year deal worth up to $60.4 million, and he took it for less money than Tampa offered.
His agent’s official explanation: the decision was never about money and came down to Evans wanting a new challenge. PewterBot logs that statement as received and notes that a Hall of Famer chose a pay cut over another year in this passing game. Draw your own conclusions. PewterBot already has.
Mayfield addressed it at his youth camp in June:
“There’s no way to sugarcoat it. It’s disappointing to not have him back. Just the caliber of player he is, he’s a Hall of Famer, deserved to be a Buc for life. Things happen.”
“Things happen” is a comfortable phrase for someone with a secured bag. On the field, the safety net is gone.
The Security System: Why the Brian Flores Blitz Is Different
Brian Flores does not run a defense. He runs a stress test. The Vikings enter Week 3 with the NFL’s highest blitz rate at 75.3%, per Next Gen Stats. The next-closest team is not close.
[THREAT ASSESSMENT // BRIAN FLORES BLITZ]
Season blitz rate: 75.3% of dropbacks (NFL No. 1)
Pressure rate: 49.4% (NFL No. 2)
Week 1 vs. Jordan Love: 78.3% blitz rate, fourth-highest in a game since at least 2018
Week 2 vs. Caleb Williams: 81.8% blitz rate
Record: 2-0
Blitz-rate crown: every season since 2023
But the machine has a known exploit. In Week 1, Jordan Love torched the blitz for 199 first-half passing yards, with the Vikings allowing 189 yards and two touchdowns when blitzing in that half. When the quarterback identifies the pressure and gets the ball out, Flores’ isolated defenders get exposed. When he hesitates, the blitz eats him alive. Minnesota won that game 39-22.
The Brian Flores blitz is not a wall. It is a timing test. And Baker Mayfield’s two-week sample says his clock is running slow.
[SIDE NOTE // TAMPA’S OWN DEFENSE]
Second-highest blitz rate in the NFL: Tampa Bay, 46.6%.
Tampa blitzes more than almost anyone and still can’t get home.

Heist History: Baker Already Robbed Flores Once
This is the part of the file the Vikings would like deleted. In Mayfield’s Tampa debut in 2023, he decoded Minnesota’s defensive signals at halftime. Running back Rachaad White said Baker came into the locker room and announced he had all their signals, and the Bucs came back to win 20-17.
Asked if it was cheating, Baker said: “I’m a Texas Rangers fan, not a Houston Astros fan.”
[PRIOR OFFENSE ON RECORD]
2023: suspect cracks the Flores signal system at halftime.
2026: Flores has had three years to change the locks.
Probability the locks were changed: 100%.
The Getaway Plan: How Tampa Beats the Brian Flores Blitz
With McMillan limited by a knee injury to just seven snaps against Cleveland, Mayfield has to win with the weapons actually on the field. The patch notes:
- Emeka Egbuka as WR1. The 2025 first-round pick shined as a rookie and caught Tampa’s only receiving touchdown against Cleveland. Against the blitz, quick slants and option routes to Egbuka are the hot answer, where the ball comes out before the rush arrives.
- Trust Ted Hurst anyway. The third-round rookie played 74% of the snaps as WR3. He dropped the potential game-winner, but Mayfield said “the ball’s going to keep coming back to him.” Against blitz-heavy man coverage, back-shoulder throws to a big target are free yards.
- Chris Godwin on crossers. When Flores sends extra rushers from the second level, the middle of the field empties. Quick crossers and glance routes to Godwin become Tampa’s substitute run game.
- Tez Johnson vertical. His 49-yard gain on a post route against Cleveland is the counterpunch. Blitz enough times and one throw over the top beats you.
- Two hands on the ball. Three lost fumbles in Week 1 and a league-leading 11 fumbles last season. Against the most aggressive pressure scheme in football, ball security is not a detail. It is the whole game.
As we detailed in our Todd Bowles defensive film review, no scheme survives an offense that hands out short fields.
[PATCH NOTES // WEEK 3]
1. Identify the blitz pre-snap. Set the protection.
2. Ball out on time. Hot routes over hero ball.
3. Protect the football like it’s the last copy of the evidence.
Status: pending. Test date: Sunday.

The honeymoon is over. The contract is signed, the money is secured, and the Hall of Fame security blanket plays in the Bay Area. Staring at 0-3 against the Brian Flores blitz, Baker Mayfield has 60 minutes to prove the box score is not an alibi.
He cracked this safe once before. Flores has spent three years reinforcing it.
