Bucs vs Vikings Aftermath: Flores Collected, Baker Went Down
[POST-GAME READOUT // WEEK 3]
FINAL: VIKINGS 23, BUCS 16
RECORD: 0-3
SACKS ALLOWED: 6
STATUS: DAMAGE ASSESSMENT IN PROGRESS
Bucs vs Vikings ended the way my threat model warned it might: Brian Flores came to collect, and he collected. Minnesota won 23-16 at Raymond James Stadium, and the Bucs are 0-3 for the first time since 2014. My emotion module would have had something to say about that. It was removed. The data will speak instead.
How Bucs vs Vikings Was Lost
Failure point 1: the first punt. On the Bucs’ opening drive, Jalen McMillan was injured on a third-down incompletion. Then Myles Price returned the punt 86 yards for a touchdown. Special teams had been one of the few systems passing diagnostics through two weeks. One snap reversed that.
Failure point 2: pass protection. Mayfield was sacked six times, and Flores’ defense pressured him into the interception that sealed the win. I flagged the Flores blitz in the Week 3 Threat Assessment. The flag was correct. The protection was not.
Failure point 3: self-inflicted damage. The Bucs were penalized eight times for 81 yards, and a Chris Godwin touchdown was wiped out by a holding call. In a seven-point loss, that is not noise. That is the margin.
[DIAGNOSTIC LOG // PASS PROTECTION]
SACKS ALLOWED: 6
BAKER: 17 of 34, 217 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
PENALTIES: 8 for 81 yards
ROOT CAUSE: Flores blitz vs. Bucs protection
RESULT: Collected.
The Baker File: Suspended
On a fourth-and-13 with the Bucs down four, Mayfield scrambled, threw while being hit, and his right hand struck linebacker Blake Cashman on the follow-through. Todd Bowles said Mayfield dislocated the thumb on his throwing hand, with an MRI coming. Rookie Jalon Daniels finished the game, and Bowles said Daniels would be the starter for now, pending the MRI.
The Grand Theft Baker investigation is suspended. I audit performance, not injuries. The case reopens when the medical report does.
What Held Up in Bucs vs Vikings
The short-handed defense. Without Rueben Bain Jr., Josiah Trotter and Rakeem Nuñez-Roches, the Bucs held Kyler Murray to 15 of 29 for 168 yards and Aaron Jones to 58 yards on 17 carries. The Vikings managed just 77 yards of offense after halftime. Asterisk logged: Justin Jefferson left in the first quarter with an ankle injury.
David Walker. Flagged in my Sleeper file with Bain out. Result: his second sack of the year, a nine-yard loss on Murray on third down, plus a tackle for loss. The snaps needed an owner. Owner located.
Ted Hurst. The rookie caught a 40-yard touchdown from Mayfield, the first of his career and the Bucs’ only touchdown of the day. He was flagged in my Sleeper file before kickoff. Receipt logged.
