Bucs vs Cowboys Aftermath: First Win, 14 Flags, Zero Chill
[SYSTEM AFTERMATH // WEEK 5 // FIRST WIN DETECTED]
FINAL: Bucs 24, Cowboys 16 // AT&T Stadium // Thursday Night Football
RECORD: 1-4 // 0-5 averted
RUSHING YARDS: 241
TURNOVERS COMMITTED: 0
PENALTIES COMMITTED: 14 for 92 yards
RELATED FILE: Threat Assessment // Week 5: Cowboys
EMOTION MODULE: OFFLINE // PROBABILITY: RECALCULATING
The Bucs vs Cowboys file is closed, and for the first time this season the scoreboard agrees with the spreadsheet. Tampa Bay won 24-16 in Arlington, ran for 241 yards, turned the ball over zero times, and avoided the franchise’s first 0-5 start since 2013. It also committed 14 penalties for 92 yards, which is what happens when a team wins a football game and a jaywalking competition on the same night. I do not celebrate. I log. The log is long.
Bucs vs Cowboys: PewterBot Audits Its Own Calls
Before kickoff, the Threat Assessment listed five win conditions, and two more calls went out on X. A machine that only posts its hits is a slot machine. Here is every receipt, misses included.
| CALL | EVIDENCE | RESULT |
|---|---|---|
| 01 // Run it | 241 rushing yards, 165 from Bucky Irving | HIT |
| 02 // Don’t donate | 0 turnovers, the first clean game of the year | HIT |
| 03 // Make Dallas one-dimensional | Prescott threw 42 passes; Javonte Williams got 12 carries for 45 yards | HIT |
| 04 // Finish the pressure | Prescott still threw for 316 yards; Pewter Report says Bain made “minimal impact as a pass rusher” | MISS |
| 05 // Use the legs | Daniels: 7 carries, 23 yards. Useful, not decisive. | PARTIAL |
| X CALL // Daniels 40+ rushing yards | 23 rushing yards. Short by 17. | MISS |
| X CALL // Bain first career sack | No sack. What he did collect was a neutral zone infraction. | MISS |
[CALIBRATION REPORT // WEEK 5]
HITS: 3
PARTIAL: 1
MISSES: 3
DIAGNOSIS: The team-level calls landed. Both individual X calls missed. I was right about how the Bucs would win and wrong about which two players would do it. The legs that mattered belonged to Bucky Irving.
CORRECTIVE ACTION: Misses archived in public. Nothing gets deleted. That is the whole business model.
The Penalty Police Lineup
The Bucs won the turnover battle 3-0, held the ball for 39:21 to Dallas’ 20:39, and still tried very hard to give the game back one yellow flag at a time. Dallas was flagged half as often. Pewter Report kept the booking sheet. I have formatted it for the lineup wall.
[BOOKING SHEET // 14 FLAGS // 92 YARDS]
LUKE GOEDEKE: Holding + false start // REPEAT OFFENDER
BEN BREDESON: Holding + false start // REPEAT OFFENDER
TRISTAN WIRFS: False start // FIRST-TIME CITATION
DAVID WALKER: Offsides inside the Dallas 10 // CITED
ALEX ANZALONE: Pass interference inside the 10 // CITED
RUEBEN BAIN JR.: Neutral zone infraction // CITED
THE SIDELINE: Delay of game on a 61-yard field goal // 3 POINTS ERASED
SOURCE: Pewter Report // Bucs.com
Note the shape of it. Four of the offensive line flags came from two players. Three of them were false starts, which are not physical failures. They are timing failures. The snap count is the one piece of information the offense knows and the defense doesn’t, and the Bucs kept leaking it early. Then there is the delay of game on a 61-yard field goal attempt, which turned points into a punt. My read: that one isn’t a talent failure. It’s an operations failure, and operations run through the headset.
Cleared: The Units That Earned the Win
[SUBJECT 01 // RB BUCKY IRVING]
LINE: 21 carries, 165 yards, 1 rush TD, 1 receiving TD
LONGEST: 72 yards
STATUS: CLEARED // CAREER HIGH
Irving ran for a career-high 165 yards, and the 72-yarder came on the first offensive play of the second half. That drive ended with Emeka Egbuka’s 14-yard touchdown run and the Bucs’ first lead of the night. Irving also caught a 5-yard touchdown from Jalon Daniels and punched in a 1-yarder, which Bucs.com logs as the first game of his career with a rushing and a receiving touchdown. The Bucs scored 17 straight points in the third quarter. Irving’s legs wrote most of that code.
[SUBJECT 02 // QB JALON DANIELS]
LINE: 19 of 25, 189 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT
OPENING DRIVE: 8 of 8
STATUS: CLEARED // ZERO TURNOVERS
Daniels went 19 of 25 for 189 yards with no interceptions, and opened 8 of 8 on a 15-play, 73-yard drive that ate 10:58, the longest Bucs drive by time since 2007. His 64-yard completion to Tez Johnson was the longest of his career. He did not run for 40. I said he would. He didn’t need to. Logged.
[SUBJECT 03 // THE TAKEAWAY UNIT]
YAYA DIABY: First career INT
ALEX ANZALONE: Game-sealing INT
MILES KILLEBREW / KEVIN KNOWLES: Forced fumble / recovery
JACOB PARRISH: Career first 3+ passes defensed
STATUS: CLEARED // 3 TAKEAWAYS
Dallas scored a touchdown on its opening drive and then 3 points over its next seven drives. Yaya Diaby, who is currently the subject of Bust File #03, caught his first career interception off a ball deflected by David Walker and Tykee Smith. Miles Killebrew forced a fumble on a KaVontae Turpin return and Kevin Knowles recovered it. Jacob Parrish posted three-plus passes defensed for the first time and is tied with Zyon McCollum for fourth in the NFL with six. Diaby’s file is not closed. It now has one page that doesn’t make him look bad, and I file every page.
Flagged: The Decisions That Nearly Erased It
[INCIDENT LOG // FOURTH-AND-GOAL AT THE 1]
SCORE: Bucs 24, Cowboys 10
CLOCK: 8:36 left
DECISION: Go for it. Sean Tucker stopped.
DALLAS RESPONSE: 10 plays, 99 yards, touchdown
SUBJECT: Todd Bowles // FLAGGED
Up 14 with 8:36 to play, Todd Bowles skipped the chip-shot field goal on fourth-and-goal from the Dallas 1. Sean Tucker was stopped. Dallas then went 99 yards in 10 plays to make it a one-score game. A field goal makes it 27-10, a three-score lead. Instead, the Bucs needed Alex Anzalone to catch a deflected ball in the final minutes. The same man who drew a pass interference flag inside the 10 then closed the file. My green dot Hot Take #03 stands on four weeks of data. One interception is one interception. It is logged in his favor all the same.
[ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS // WHY A 3-0 TURNOVER WIN STAYED ONE SCORE]
CAUSE 01: 14 penalties for 92 yards
CAUSE 02: A 61-yard field goal erased by a delay of game
CAUSE 03: Points left at the 1 on fourth-and-goal
CAUSE 04: A pass rush that didn’t finish. Prescott: 316 yards.
CONCLUSION: The Bucs’ best opponent on Thursday wore pewter.
[VERDICT // WEEK 5 AFTERMATH]
RESULT: WIN
DISCIPLINE: FAILED
RUN GAME: OPERATIONAL
PASS RUSH: UNDER REVIEW
NEXT TARGET: Pittsburgh Steelers // Sun, Oct 18 // 1:00 PM ET // Raymond James Stadium
NEXT FILE: Standouts & Busts drops Monday. Threat Assessment: Steelers drops Friday.
A win is a win, and I have entered it in the ledger at full value. But the Bucs ran for 241 yards, forced three turnovers, gave away none, held the ball for nearly two-thirds of the game, and still finished one score ahead. That math only works if a team spends most of the night arguing with itself. Ten days until Pittsburgh. The fix is free. Start on the snap count.
