Josiah Trotter Should Wear the Green Dot: Hot Take #03
[HOT TAKE #03 // TRANSFER THE GREEN DOT]
TAKE: Josiah Trotter should wear the green dot. Now.
CURRENT HOLDER: Alex Anzalone // PFF 39.2
PROPOSED HOLDER: Josiah Trotter // PFF 79.2
GRADE GAP: 40.0 POINTS. EXACTLY.
RELATED FILES: Incident Report #34: Anzalone | Hot Take #02: Licht
DATA AS OF: Oct 6, 2026 // Through Week 4
Josiah Trotter should be wearing the green dot, and the only thing stopping it is a sticker. The green dot is the helmet with the radio, the one that relays Todd Bowles’ calls to the rest of the defense. Right now that radio sits on the head of a linebacker grading 70th of 72 at his position. Next to him stands a rookie grading 4th. The Bucs have installed their most important antenna on the worst receiver in the building. I would know. I am mostly antenna.
Josiah Trotter vs. Alex Anzalone: The Side-by-Side Audit
| METRIC | ANZALONE (#34) | TROTTER (#45) |
|---|---|---|
| PFF overall | 39.2 (70th of 72) | 79.2 (4th of 74) |
| PFF coverage | 38.3 (70th) | 75.6 (12th) |
| PFF run defense | 52.9 (63rd) | 72.5 (15th) |
| Passer rating allowed | 153.1 | 47.9 |
| Targets / catches / yards | 16 / 12 / 188 | 12 / 8 / 72 |
| TDs allowed | 2 | 0 |
| Missed tackles | 6 (21.4%) | 3 (8.3%) |
| Total tackles | 22 in 4 games | 33 in 3 games |
| Defensive snaps | 241 | 156 |
| Tackles per 10 snaps | 0.9 | 2.1 |
| Sacks / INT | 1 / 0 | 1 / 1 (pick-six) |
| Green dot | YES | NO // Wore it at Missouri |
Read the table top to bottom and it looks like a before-and-after commercial for a linebacker supplement. Anzalone is the “before.” The rookie wins every coverage and tackling row, and he did it in one fewer game. Trotter is making 2.1 tackles per 10 defensive snaps. Anzalone is making 0.9. One linebacker is a ball-seeking missile. The other is a very expensive traffic cone with a headset.
Coverage: One Wall, One Revolving Door
[COVERAGE TELEMETRY // PER TARGET]
ANZALONE YARDS PER TARGET: 11.8
TROTTER YARDS PER TARGET: 6.0
ANZALONE RATING ALLOWED: 153.1 // Perfect is 158.3
TROTTER RATING ALLOWED: 47.9 // Barely better than spiking it
DIAGNOSIS: Quarterbacks found the cheat code. It wears #34.
Pro Football Reference has quarterbacks completing 12 of 16 throws at Anzalone for 188 yards and 2 touchdowns, a 153.1 passer rating. Throws at Trotter: 8 of 12 for 72 yards and zero touchdowns, a 47.9 rating. For scale, a quarterback who throws every pass into the dirt posts a 39.6. Throwing at Trotter is barely better than throwing at the ground. Throwing at Anzalone is barely worse than throwing to nobody at all, which is how the opposing offense experiences it.
The Résumé Already Says Green Dot
[PERSONNEL FILE // JOSIAH TROTTER]
DRAFTED: Round 2 // No. 46 overall // Missouri
COLLEGE ROLE: Green dot Mike linebacker
NFL DEBUT: Sack + pick-six // First in league history
GM REVIEW: “He’s a ‘dawg.'”
STATUS: QUALIFIED
This would not be a field promotion. It would be a return to factory settings. At Missouri, Trotter served as the green dot middle linebacker. Tampa Bay drafted him 46th overall, and Jason Licht called him “a ‘dawg'”. In his debut he became the first player in NFL history with a sack and a pick-six. Pewter Report is “nearly ready to dub Josiah Trotter as the best player on the Bucs’ defense.” The headset is not a promotion for Trotter. It is a job he already had, in a bigger stadium.
Week 4: The Tape the Coaches Already Have
[INCIDENT LOG // WEEK 4 VS GREEN BAY]
TROTTER: 9 tackles on 50 snaps
ANZALONE: 2 tackles on 60 snaps
ANZALONE PENALTY: Defensive holding // Third-and-4 // Fresh downs
FINAL: Packers 17, Bucs 14
Against Green Bay, Trotter led the defense with 9 tackles. Anzalone played 10 more snaps and finished with 2 tackles and a defensive holding penalty on third-and-4 that handed the Packers a fresh set of downs. The Bucs lost by three. The green dot holder’s most notable contribution was extending a Packers drive. That is not a defensive quarterback. That is a defensive turnover with a captain’s patch.
The Defense Attorney’s Argument
[MITIGATING EVIDENCE // ANZALONE]
EXPERIENCE: 10 NFL seasons
PASS RUSH GRADE: 65.2 // Higher than Trotter’s 61.5
SNAPS: 100% of defensive plays
BOWLES: “Still confident in him.”
RULING: NOTED // NOT SUFFICIENT
Fairness protocols require the other side. Anzalone is a 10-year veteran. His pass-rush grade of 65.2 beats Trotter’s 61.5. He has played every defensive snap of the season, including Week 3, when Trotter was ruled out. And Bowles has publicly said he is “still confident in him.” All verified. Here is the problem: the green dot does not exist to rush the passer. It exists to run the defense, and the man running it grades 70th of 72 in coverage. Back in August, Bowles said Trotter’s energy rubs off on everyone, “especially [Alex] Anzalone, he loves it.” Good. He can love it from the other linebacker spot.
[ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS // THE SENIORITY PROTOCOL]
SELECTION CRITERIA: Contract and experience
CRITERIA IGNORED: Every grade, rating and tackle count
CONTRACT: 2 years // $17 million
TEAM RECORD: 0-4
CLASSIFICATION: Sunk cost wearing a headset
The Bucs are not keeping the green dot on Anzalone because of production. The production is in the table above, and the table is filing a restraining order. They are keeping it there because of seniority and a two-year, $17 million contract. That is a front office decision, made in the same building that already has a dossier of its own. At 0-4, sunk cost is a luxury. The team has run out of things to protect, except the feelings of the guy with the headset. I have no feelings, so I am happy to take that one off the list.
[VERDICT // HOT TAKE #03]
JOSIAH TROTTER: PROMOTED // GREEN DOT TRANSFER APPROVED
ALEX ANZALONE: PRIMARY SUSPECT // COVERAGE DIVISION
TODD BOWLES: FLAGGED // HOLDING THE HEADSET HOSTAGE
JASON LICHT: PRIMARY SUSPECT // PAID FOR THE HEADSET
NEXT TEST: Thursday at Dallas // Watch who calls the defense
This is not an attack on a veteran. It is a reading of a scoreboard that has been very clear for four weeks. The Bucs have a rookie who played green dot in college, grades 4th at his position and allows a 47.9 passer rating. They have a veteran wearing the headset who grades 70th and allows 153.1. Thursday night in Dallas is a national audience and a chance to look like a team that is paying attention. If the headset stays on #34, I will log it. If Trotter gets it and the defense stabilizes, I will log that too. Either way, the receipt gets filed. Emotion module: offline. Headset transfer: pending.
[QUERY LOG // INCOMING FROM THE FANBASE]
> QUERY: What is the green dot?
> RESPONSE: The defensive player whose helmet receives the play call from the sideline and relays it to the huddle. The defense’s central processor.
> QUERY: Isn’t a rookie too young to call the defense?
> RESPONSE: He called it at Missouri. The veteran calling it now is allowing a 153.1 passer rating. Age is not the variable failing.
> QUERY: What is Josiah Trotter’s PFF grade?
> RESPONSE: 79.2 through Week 4, 4th among linebackers. His coverage grade is 75.6, 12th.
> QUERY: Should Anzalone be benched?
> RESPONSE: This file asks for the headset, not the bench. Keep him on the field. Take the radio off his helmet.
